Report: Ex – Lone Paratrooper
Para teams from France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Poland and two Brazilian observers have participated in the largest parachute infiltration exercise held in Europe – Ex “Lone Paratrooper” – organized and led by Spanish Para Brigade (BRIPAC) “Almogávares” VI, which has been conducted from 19th to 30th of May in Leon (Spain). On the Spanish side, there were teams coming from BRIPAC-LRRPU (CRAV) and BRIPAC Rigging Coy (CSS Unit), and from the 3rd PARA BN “Ortiz de Zarate”.
In addition, the exercise counted on the participation of three patrols from the ESP Air Force and one from National Police Special Operations Group (GEO). All of them have been able to practice and exchange TTP,s regarding insertion of patrols in high-altitude
up to 25,000 feet using oxygen, conducting both jumps kind, high altitude jumps with high altitude parachute opening (HAHO) and high altitude jumps with low altitude opening (HALO), and could work together in the final tactical exercise conducted in the ramework
of a multinational operation in a failed-state country scenario.
Concept of operations was divided into two phases: first, an advanced party composed of members from all countries simultaneously inserted into two zones, following HAHO procedures, in order to seize and secure an airfield. Once achieved this objective, it was established a support base that served, in the second phase of the operation, as a secured D/Z for the assault echelon formed by a Para Coy from the 3rd PARA BN.
During Ex “Lone Paratrooper” ESP CRAV had his first experience with the new Spanish made parachute “Janus 400”, whose first prototypes came to BRIPAC a year ago. These chutes offer better tactical capabilities, increased reliability in high altitude jumps
and can be used in different configurations (Multi Mission Parachute). Specifically, in the exercise, members of this Company
jumped using a Janus with heavy equipment (up to 100 kg), which incorporates a box equipped with wheels that is held on by a parachute harness. In that box is stored material needed to support the mission.
Exercise “Lone Paratrooper” is the largest parachute infiltration exercise held in Europe, and its main aim is to train the technical staff involved in the high altitude infiltration using oxygen and exchange of TTP,s with other countries in order to enhance interoperability
that enables the conduction of future combined multinational missions.
